When kapuso actress Carla Abellana began working on the series, “My Husband’s Lover,” she was quite anxious about how the series might be received especially by conservative viewers who might be “allergic” to the controversial topic of homosexuality and homosexual relations.

“My Husband’s Lover” is a story that revolves around Lally (Carla’s character) who marries a closet bisexual named Vincent (Tom Rodriguez) who has not gotten over his feelings for his ex-boyfriend Eric (Dennis Trillo).

After parting ways with Eric when he decided to go abroad, Vincent (a bisexual) fell in love with Lally, an innocent but responsible woman.  Just a few months later, Lally became pregnant – albeit, unplanned – and so Vincent decided to marry her.  Several years later, Eric returns to the country with the hope of rekindling the old flame with Vincent but it was too late – he later learned that Vincent had married.  Eric was devastated.

Although the series touches on the homosexual relationship between Vincent and Eric, Lally perspective serves as the pivot of its story.

To many, the show owes its success to the uniqueness of its story and its boldness to discuss a very controversial topic, which in many communities are still considered taboo.

Since the launch of the series in June, it has consistently been a trending topic in the Philippines and in several episodes, worldwide, in the micro-blogging site Twitter.  It is also widely discussed in other social networking sites like Facebook and Instagram, in blogs and in the mainstream media.

In an interview by GMANetwork.com during the mall show of “My Husband’s Lover” in Imus, Cavite, Carla claimed that she thinks that the show is her most successful TV project yet.

“Ito yung masasabi kong pinaka-successful kong project at feel ko na pinaka-blessed ako,” she said.
She added that she is overwhelmed by how warmly the show was received by the viewers.

“Honestly hindi ko ineexpect talaga kasi ako naman kapag nabibigyan ng project grateful ako, I put all my focus pero hindi talaga ako nag-eexpect ng kahit ano kasi ayaw kong ma-disappoint or ma-distract,” shared the actress.

Carla speaks proudly about the series.

“Kakaiba siya, it’s the first time talaga na may kakaibang pasabog, medyo risky pero nagsugal talaga ang GMA ganun naman talaga tayo sa GMA, we take risks at natutuwa tayo na tinanggap naman ng mga tao ang programa,” she said.
